A wasp is any insect of the narrow-waisted suborder Apocrita of the order Hymenoptera which is neither a bee nor an ant; this excludes the broad-waisted sawflies (Symphyta), which look somewhat like wasps but are in a separate suborder. The wasps do not constitute a clade, a complete natural group with a single ancestor, as their common ancestor is shared by bees and ants. Many wasps, those in the clade Aculeata, can sting their insect prey. -- Wikipedia In hindi it is called as ततैया ततैया एक प्रकार का कीट होता है। जीववैज्ञानिक दृष्टि से हायमेनोप्टेरा (Hymenoptera) गण और आपोक्रिटा (Apocrita) उपगण का हर वह कीट होता है जो चींटी या मक्खी न हो। कुछ जानी-मानी ततैया जातियाँ छत्तों में रहती हैं और जिसमें एक अण्डें देने वाली रानी होती है और अन्य सभी ततैयें कर्मी होते हैं। लेकिन अधिकतर ततैयें अकेले रहते हैं। अकेले रहने वाले बहुत से ततैयों की मादाएँ अन्य कीटों को डंक मारकर उनके जीवित लेकिन मूर्छित शरीरों में अण्डें देती हैं जिनसे शिशु निकलने पर वे उस कीट को खा जाते हैं। इस कारणवश कृषि में कई फ़सल का नाश करने वाले कीटों की रोकथाम में ततैयों का बहुत महत्व होता है।
